The African Buffalo is one of the world’s most powerful horned animals. Some species can weigh in at around 2,000 pounds and can reach five feet tall. Despite its impressive size and weight, the African Buffalo can reach a top speed of 37 miles per hour, which comes in useful when being chased by predators (most often, hungry lions) and when fending off attacks or protecting their herd. African Buffalos are categorized as being “near threatened” by the International Union for the Conservation mainly due to habitat fragmentation. There are approximately 400,000 African Buffalo surviving in the wild.
