Elephants are the largest land creatures on earth. These majestic creatures can weigh up to 7 tons and can grow up to 13 feet in height. Elephant tusks actually evolved from teeth and are quite multifunctional. Elephants use their tusks to dig, lift objects, gather food and for defense against the occasional predator. Unfortunately, hunters and poachers kill around 20,000 elephants each year for their tusks and this illegal activity is a direct threat to elephants’ ability to survive in the wild. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the Asian elephant as being endangered.
